The quality of law
enforcement in Fort Bend County is very high. This
is due in good part to the recruitment standards and
training implemented by the heads of our law
enforcement agencies.
Many of the new officers at the Sheriff’s Office and
other local police agencies are initially trained by
the fulltime staff at the Gus George Law Enforcement
Academy. Years ago under my administration, my
office committed to provide much of the training. We
have been asked to teach, among others, classes in
the penal code, code of criminal procedure, juvenile
law, narcotics law, victims' rights law,
constitutional law, search and seizure, and how to
professionally testify in the courtroom.
From time to time, my attorneys have accepted the
invitation to visit the police departments in our
county and instruct officers on the law pertaining
to search and seizure, confessions, and arrests.
Training officers in the changes in the law is
something in which we take pride. After each of the
last six regular legislative sessions, the Sheriff
and I have hosted a training session to update
officers invited from every police agency in our
county.
In addition to training officers, prosecutors are
available during regular office hours to assist
officers in the application of the law to fact
situations which they encounter. Prosecutors also
assist officers in the drafting of affidavits for
the arrest of people and the searching of places.
After hours and on weekends, a prosecutor is
assigned and available to perform these services. |
